BREC’s Marat Terterov gave a lecture at BAU University in Istanbul

12 May 2023

BREC Principal Representative Dr. Marat Terterov held a public lecture on energy security, transition, and sustainability on 12 May 2023, organized by Bahçeşehir University (BAU) in Istanbul.

The lecture covered various topics, including the key terminology of energy security, transition, and sustainability, the impact of global game-changers on the macro-environment, and the future of energy balance. Dr. Terterov also discussed the key actors in the energy sector, including the EU, the US, China, and India, as well as OPEC and the oil producers.

The lecture highlighted the EU's leading role in driving the green transition and climate diplomacy globally, as well as its focus on decarbonization policies. The EU has a toolbox to ensure a net-zero carbon future by 2050, including the taxonomy, circular economy, carbon border taxes, covid recovery fund, Energy Community, ECT, technical assistance, lending, and finance.

The lecture also emphasized OPEC and the oil producers' efforts to be part of the solution rather than the problem, with massive investments in sustainable energy at home and abroad, and state agencies and ministries set up to address the issue. However, Dr. Terterov noted that there can be no transition without transmission and that there will be no phasing out of the old system unless the new system works effectively.

Dr. Terterov's lecture provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in the energy sector and the importance of sustainable and clean energy.
