Presentation of the 2015 EGF Gazprom Monitor Annual Review

BREC Christmas gala event on prevailing European energy security challenges

16 December 2015, 1 - 6 PM CET

TUSIAD Avenue des Gaulois 13, Brussels 1040

In the present day and age, when we think of European energy security, we think Gazprom. Love it or hate it, the Russian gas giant is, for many of us, both scourge and partner of the Europeans at the same time. European energy experts monitor Gazprom's external activities with bated breath. None more so than St. Petersburg-based Dr. Jack Sharples: who has emerged as one of Europe's top "Gazprom watchers" via his multiple years of authorship of the Gazprom Monitor monthly reports and annual reviews published by the Brussels-based website, European Geopolitical Forum (EGF). This autumn, the second edition of the Gazprom Monitor Annual Review was released to energy security-conscious Europeans, and Dr. Sharples presented the core findings of this 2015 Annual Review in the BREC format. Dr. Sharples' presentation of the Review, a study that closely follows Gazprom's external activities for the past 12 months, was based on the structure of the Review itself. It covered the following topics:

  • Gazprom and the EU gas market

  • The EU antitrust investigation into Gazprom

  • Nord Stream

  • Turkish Stream

  • Gazprom and Ukraine

  • Gazprom and the Asia-Pacific market

During his presentation Dr. Sharples offered his assessment with respect to each of these topics based on the Gazprom Monitor Annual Review for the past year. He then offered his prognosis on what European energy security watchers can likely expect as we look forward to the ensuing 12 months. Given the high stakes involved in Gazprom's role in the European energy security reckoning, we enjoyed a lively discussion to cap off an eventful year for all of us associated with the Brussels Energy Club. Extracts of the Gazprom Monitor Annual Review for 2015 can be found here. Program :
